Austin Area Collective Housing Mission Statement
Austin Area Collective Housing is establishing a housing cooperative on the east side of Austin with the following goals:
- To increase the availability of affordable, democratically-controlled housing in Austin, both by providing such housing ourselves and by serving as a clearing house to assist others in starting new cooperatives.
- To bring our human and other resources to the surrounding community (to be a good neighbor). This may include offering to allow local organizations to hold events in our common space if this is feasible for us and makes sense for the community as a whole.
- To utilize our space to build community, such as by encouraging people to board (eat some meals at the house, for people who live elsewhere) and hosting potlucks to which we would invite residents of the neighborhood and members of other co-ops.
- To live sustainably and to build, retain, and promulgate knowledge useful for doing so, particularly in an environment with limited water resources.
- To work towards ending oppression and to be a safe space for all people, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.
Note: This statement is a work in progress and subject to slight modification.
